Our solar battery has been running for about eight months, and the biggest difference is how little I think about peak-hour electricity anymore. Before installing it, our evening routine was expensive: cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging devices between 5 and 9 p.m. regularly pushed our daily usage into the highest rate period. Now the battery stores excess solar power during the afternoon and supplies most of our home after sunset.
I chose a 10 kWh ion lithium battery because it seemed large enough for our normal evening load without paying for capacity we would rarely use. On a typical sunny day, it reaches nearly full by mid-afternoon. By bedtime, it is usually around 40 to 50 percent, and it carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heating controls through the night. During cloudy weather, the solar battery sometimes runs low before morning, but the system automatically switches to grid power. That backup changeover has been completely seamless.
The savings have been more noticeable than I expected. Our summer electric bill dropped from roughly $210 to $125, even though we used the air conditioner more often. The exact amount changes with weather and utility rates, but shifting stored solar energy into peak hours has made the biggest difference. I also like seeing the battery monitoring app show where our electricity is going. It helped me realize that our water heater was consuming more than I thought, so I adjusted its schedule to use daytime solar power.
My one minor problem happened after a firmware update. The app stopped displaying the battery’s state of charge correctly, although the battery itself continued working. I restarted the gateway and contacted the installer, who pushed another update the next day. Since then, it has been reliable.
For me, the value is not just lower bills. Having home energy storage makes our solar panels more useful after dark and gives me a little more confidence during short outages.
