Nearly six months ago, I added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery to my rooftop system, and the biggest surprise has been how much calmer our evenings feel.
Before the battery, our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but we still bought expensive grid power after dinner. Now the battery charges from midday solar and runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater through the evening.
My utility uses time-of-use pricing, so this change matters more than the capacity number on the brochure. On sunny days, I see the battery reach 100% by about 2:30 p.m. Once the peak rate begins, it supplies the house instead of the grid. A typical summer bill used to include roughly three to four dollars of evening peak charges every day. Now those charges have mostly disappeared. My monthly bill fell from $185 to $112, despite running the air conditioner more often. The battery is not making electricity; it is simply moving my solar production to the hours when power costs more, which is exactly the kind of solar battery savings I hoped for.
My hiccup involved inverter use. One evening, the app showed the battery at 18%, but the system stopped discharging and pulled from the grid. I found a backup-reserve setting had been changed to 20% during a firmware update. Lowering it restored operation, although I left a 25% reserve afterward for outages. That troubleshooting moment taught me not to assume the battery was faulty before checking the settings.
I still watch the monitoring app mornings, especially after cloudy weather. On those days, I charge less from solar and accept a smaller saving rather than forcing a full cycle. Overall, the storage system has made my electricity use more predictable, and seeing less grid dependence on each bill is satisfying.
