0ne winter I finally added a 200ah lifepo4 battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity use kept eating into the savings. The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My electrician mounted the battery cabinet in the garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar before sending power back to the house after sunset.
On the first evening, I watched the monitoring app show the battery dropping from 100% to about 62% by bedtime. That felt surprisingly reassuring; the heat pump, lights, and television were running without pulling much from the grid. The following morning, the battery had enough reserve to cover breakfast and keep the coffee maker running until the panels started producing.
Peak-hour savings were the biggest difference. Before installation, my utility charged roughly 31¢ per kWh between 4 and 9 p.m. Now I set the battery to discharge during that window. In a typical month, it supplies around 180 kWh of evening energy, saving me about $55 to $60 after accounting for a little inverter loss. My total bill has fallen from about $210 to $145, though weather and heating obviously change the result.
The one annoyance happened during a cloudy week when the battery stopped discharging at 20% state of charge. I initially thought the storage battery had failed, but the app showed reserve mode was enabled after a firmware update. I lowered the backup reserve to 15%, restarted the inverter, and it immediately resumed normal operation. Since then, I have left a 20% reserve for outages, which feels like a sensible compromise.
At this point, I am happiest with the predictability rather than dramatic independence. The solar battery quietly covers expensive hours, and I rarely think about it during our normal winter routine.
