February last year, I installed an lfp home battery, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. We already had six kilowatts of rooftop solar, but before the battery, most of our daytime surplus went back to the grid for a credit. Now the battery stores that midday energy and runs the house after dinner.
The difference on the bill was noticeable in the first full month. Our household uses roughly 18 kWh daily, including cooking, a heat-pump water heater, and charging an electric car. We previously bought about 9 kWh from the grid each day. With the solar battery, that average fell to around 2 kWh, mostly on cloudy mornings. Our monthly bill dropped from about $210 to $78, although weather and rates vary. I like watching the monitoring app show the battery discharging during the expensive 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. window. It makes the savings feel real rather than theoretical.
I did have one moment during the first hot spell. The battery stopped discharging overnight, even though it showed 64 percent charge. I checked the obvious things, then found the inverter had switched into backup-reserve mode after a grid outage. The installer talked me through changing the reserve setting, and normal operation returned within ten minutes. I now keep a 20 percent reserve, which seems like a sensible compromise between backup power and daily savings.
After eight months, the system has not eliminated my electricity bill, but it has made it much more predictable. The lithium battery is quiet, requires no daily attention, and has handled our normal loads without drama. My advice is to compare usable capacity, round-trip efficiency, warranty, and installation cost—not just headline storage size. For me, shifting solar power into peak hours has been the most valuable part of owning it.
