Using my solar battery each evening has changed how I think about electricity. Before installing a 13.5-kilowatt-hour home energy storage unit, I watched rooftop solar power disappear into the grid by mid-afternoon. Now the battery charges in sunshine and powers our house after dinner.
The biggest difference appears during peak hours. My utility charges more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when we cook, run the dishwasher, and turn on lights. I programmed the battery to discharge then. On a typical summer day, it supplies roughly seven to ten kilowatt-hours. That has lowered my monthly electric bill by about $65, although savings vary with weather and rates. Last July, I paid $118 instead of $183 the previous summer.
I did have one minor scare in January. The battery stopped discharging overnight, and the monitoring app showed a communication warning. I checked the breaker, restarted the gateway, and waited. Nothing changed. Support discovered our Wi-Fi router had updated overnight and dropped the connection. Reconnecting it fixed everything; I lost only one evening of peak savings.
Since then, I keep the gateway on a dedicated network and check the battery state of charge weekly. I reserve twenty percent instead of draining it completely. That reserve has carried us through two brief outages, keeping the refrigerator, modem, and lights running.
The system has not eliminated my electric bill, and winter production is lower. Still, solar panels, lithium battery storage, a smart inverter, and time-of-use scheduling make our costs predictable. I even joke that checking the battery dashboard is as routine as using a quickvue at home covid test, though the dashboard is less stressful. For me, the real win is simple: I use more of the solar power I generate, buy less expensive grid electricity, and notice the savings every month without much drama.
