Running my home on solar became much more useful after I added a battery, mainly because I stopped sending most of my afternoon generation back to the grid for a small credit. My system is modest: rooftop panels, a 10 kWh lithium battery, an inverter, and a growatt smart meter 3 phase. We have a normal family routine, with cooking, laundry, and showers mostly happening after work, so storing daytime energy made immediate sense.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 pm and 9 pm, when our electricity tariff is highest. Before the battery, the oven, induction cooktop, and heat-pump water heater pushed our evening bill up noticeably. Now the battery usually reaches 100 percent by midafternoon and discharges through the expensive period. On a sunny day, it covers nearly all of our evening use; on cloudy days, it still takes the edge off. My daily grid usage has fallen from roughly 18 kWh to 6 or 7 kWh, though results vary by season.
The one annoying moment came during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the obvious settings, restarted the inverter, and confirmed that backup reserve had not accidentally been set to 100 percent. The installer eventually found a time-zone setting that was wrong after a firmware update. Once corrected, the battery followed the schedule normally. That small issue taught me to check the app's operating mode before assuming the hardware had failed.
After three months, the battery has reduced my electricity bills by about $110 per month compared with the same period last year. I am not energy independent, and winter will test that claim, but the solar battery has made consumption steadier and peak pricing less stressful. For me, that is the practical win.
