Yesterday I checked my electricity app before making coffee and noticed something I had hoped for but had not really believed: our solar battery had carried the house through the expensive evening hours with barely any grid power.
We installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly because our utility’s peak rate runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The installer paired it with a hybrid inverter with solar battery charging, so excess power from our rooftop solar panels goes into the battery instead of immediately being exported. On a sunny day, the battery usually reaches 95% by midafternoon. Around 4 p.m., it switches over automatically and runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the dishwasher.
The biggest practical difference is after dinner. Before storage, we were using the grid during exactly those high-rate hours, even though the panels had produced plenty earlier in the day. Now I see the battery discharging at roughly 1.5 to 2 kW while we cook and use appliances. Our monthly bill has dropped by about $55 on average, with the largest savings during hot months when the air conditioner runs in the evening. That is not a dramatic “free electricity” result, but it is a noticeable reduction, and the battery should become more valuable as rates increase.
I did have one small scare during the first month. The monitoring app showed the battery at 0% even though the inverter displayed 42%. I restarted the app, checked the communication cable, and contacted the installer. It turned out to be a delayed software update rather than a battery problem. Since then, the solar battery system has been boring in the best possible way.
My main advice is to look closely at your utility’s time-of-use pricing before buying storage. For us, peak-hour bill savings matter more than backup power, and that makes the investment feel worthwhile.
