After I installed a 5kWh home battery alongside my rooftop solar last spring, my evening routine changed more than I expected. I used to watch the inverter send surplus power back to the grid during the afternoon, then buy electricity at the expensive peak rate after dinner. Now the battery charges while the panels are producing and runs the house from about 5 p.m. until midnight. Our usual loads—refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and washing machine—are covered without any noticeable interruption.
The biggest difference appears on the monthly bill. Before storage, our summer electricity bill averaged around $145 because we used most of our power after work. With the solar battery handling those evening hours, the same type of month was closer to $ eighty. That result changes with cloudy weather and air-conditioning use, but shifting solar energy into peak hours has been more valuable to me than simply exporting extra electricity for a small credit. I also like seeing the battery state of charge on the monitoring app. It makes our household energy use much easier to understand.
My system uses a lithium battery, and I have also experimented with a compact batterie lithium 100ah unit for a shed circuit and backup lighting. It is not large enough to run the whole house, but it handles lights, a small freezer, and phone charging surprisingly well. I keep it on a proper solar charge controller and avoid completely draining it.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning the battery showed a warning and stopped discharging. The app pointed to a communication fault between the inverter and battery. I switched the system off, waited a few minutes, and restarted it in the order recommended by the installer. Everything returned to normal, and the stored charge was still available. Since then, I check cable connections and firmware updates every few months.
For me, the practical win is simple: my solar power now works after sunset, when I actually need it.
