I installed my home solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime use, but the dishwasher, heat pump, and cooking all came on after sunset. That was where the storage system started making a noticeable difference.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery bank, built around a lipo battery 100ah module design. The installer paired it with a hybrid inverter and placed everything in the garage. I eventually learned that “self-consumption” mode was better for me than backup-only mode.
Before storage, my utility bill averaged about $185 monthly in summer. After switching to battery power from 4 p.m. until around 10 p.m., it dropped to roughly $92. The exact savings vary with cloudy weather and air-conditioning, but seeing the battery discharge during expensive peak hours is satisfying. I still pull from the grid overnight when the battery reaches its reserve, but that reserve keeps the lights, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi running during outages.
My only real hiccup happened during a heat wave. The inverter showed a warning that battery temperature was high, and it stopped charging. I panicked briefly, then found the garage had climbed past 95 degrees. I moved a portable fan nearby, cleared the ventilation space, and called the installer. They recommended keeping the battery away from direct afternoon heat and lowering the charge rate temporarily. Once the room cooled, normal operation returned. That small incident taught me that solar battery performance depends on installation conditions, not just advertised capacity.
Six months in, I am pleased with the system for my home. I check the battery state of charge most mornings, but otherwise it quietly does its job every day. My biggest advice is to compare your utility rate plan first and leave enough reserve for outages.
