Running a solar battery at home has changed how I think about electricity. Before installing mine, I mainly watched the daytime production graph and hoped the panels would cover everything. They did, but our biggest usage came after dinner, when solar output was already zero.
I chose a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery marketed as a growatt sph6000 compatible battery for my inverter. The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, ran a short cable route, and configured the charge and discharge windows through the inverter app. My only real job was moving boxes out of the way and checking that the Wi-Fi signal reached the controller.
The difference showed up during the first week. On sunny days, the battery charged by early afternoon, then supplied the cooker, refrigerator, and heat pump after sunset. Previously, I pulled that evening power from the grid at the expensive peak rate. Now the battery carries us through most of the high-rate period. My daily bill savings are not identical, but they average around $1.50–$2.00. On cloudy days, I still see a benefit because the system saves whatever solar energy it can and tops up from the grid overnight at the cheaper rate. In a typical month, that has reduced my peak consumption by roughly 120 kWh.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I found the inverter had switched to backup reserve mode after a brief outage earlier that day. Lowering the reserve from 30% to 20% restored normal operation. I now leave it at 25%, which feels like a sensible safety cushion without wasting much capacity.
The best part is the quiet, automatic routine. I rarely think about it.
