After installing my small rooftop solar array last spring, I expected the battery to help mostly during outages. Instead, the biggest difference showed up on my electricity bill during peak hours.
My setup is fairly modest: eight panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 10-kWh lithium battery mounted in the garage. I also keep a separate batterie lithium 12v 50ah unit for my router, modem, and a couple of LED lights. It is not connected to the main storage bank; I bought it as a simple backup battery before installing the larger system.
On sunny days, solar power runs the refrigerator and washing machine first, then charges the battery. Around 4 p.m., the inverter starts drawing from storage instead of the grid. That timing has been surprisingly valuable. My utility rate jumps from roughly 18 cents to 34 cents per kWh between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, dinner, laundry, and air conditioning all landed in that expensive window.
Since adding energy storage, my monthly bill has dropped by about $45 during summer, even though our household usage has not changed much. The battery usually reaches 100 percent by early afternoon and finishes near 20 percent after dinner. I reserve 20 percent because I like having emergency capacity overnight.
My only real troubleshooting moment came in November. The monitoring app showed the battery refusing to discharge, although the house was importing power. I checked the inverter and found its backup setting had switched off after a firmware update. Turning that setting back on fixed everything within a minute. It was a useful reminder that solar battery ownership is not completely hands-off.
Still, I have had no regrets. The system is quiet, the lithium iron phosphate chemistry feels reassuring, and I can watch usage fall without changing our routine. For me, the best part is simply using my own solar electricity at night instead of buying the expensive version from the utility.
