Eventually I got tired of watching my electricity meter race upward every evening, especially after adding air-conditioning to our household routine. We installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery with a deye 8kw hybrid inverter last spring, and the biggest change has been how calmly we use power after sunset.
Our rooftop solar usually fills the battery by mid-afternoon. Instead of exporting most of that energy for a modest credit, the battery storage holds it until the expensive evening period. Around 5 p.m., the inverter switches our house from the grid to stored energy. It runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and one air conditioner without any noticeable interruption. On a typical summer weekday, our peak-hour consumption fell from roughly 9 kWh to 2 kWh. That has reduced my monthly bill by about $65 to $90, depending on the weather and how much cooling we use. I still buy grid electricity overnight in winter, but the difference is obvious when I compare bills from before installation.
The one hiccup came during a very hot week. I noticed the battery state of charge stopping at 92 percent even though the panels were producing well. I checked the monitoring app and found a charge limit had been set conservatively during commissioning. After changing that setting, the battery returned to normal. I appreciated that the system did not simply fail silently; the app showed battery voltage, solar input, load, and grid flow clearly enough for me to spot the issue.
I have not added more battery capacity yet. For my home, the current solar-plus-storage setup covers the expensive hours far better than I expected. The real benefit is not being completely off-grid; it is using my own solar energy when electricity costs the most, with less dependence on utility rate changes now.
