After three months of watching my solar panels send surplus electricity back to the grid for a small credit, I added a 10-kWh home battery. The main reason was simple: I wanted to use my own power after sunset, especially during our expensive evening peak hours.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set a backup reserve of 25%. We were running by late afternoon, with only one brief app setup call.
The first evening felt almost like a victory. After cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging our electric car, the battery covered nearly everything until morning. Our utility meter barely moved between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., which used to be the most expensive part of our day.
Before storage, we bought roughly 8–10 kWh from the grid on a typical weekday. Now that has fallen to about 2–3 kWh, mostly because the battery discharges during peak hours. That works out to around $35–$45 less on our monthly bill, depending on weather and driving. It is not a magical zero bill, but seeing solar energy carry us through the evening has made the investment feel practical rather than theoretical.
The only real hiccup came during a cloudy week when the battery stopped charging at its usual rate. I initially blamed the solar panels, but the monitoring app showed a grid import limit had been triggered after a firmware update. I restarted the inverter and checked the backup settings, but the warning returned.
A message to the installer revealed the software had reset our maximum charge current. They changed one setting remotely, and normal charging returned the next sunny morning. That small problem reminded me that langzeit reliability matters: this is not a set-and-forget appliance. Still, the daily savings and quiet automatic operation have made the battery one of the most useful upgrades we have made to our home.
