Running my home battery through the first full summer has changed how I think about electricity. I installed a 10kWh solar energy storage battery beside my inverter in late spring, mostly to avoid buying expensive power during evening peak hours. Before that, my solar panels stopped helping much after dinner, just when the family started cooking, running the dishwasher, and turning on the air conditioner.
Now the battery charges from surplus midday generation and usually carries us through until midnight. On sunny days, I often see the battery reach 100 percent by early afternoon. It then discharges gradually instead of pulling from the grid. The biggest difference shows up on my bill: my peak-rate usage has fallen from roughly 9 kWh a day to around 2 kWh. That is not a dramatic change every day, but over a month it has shaved about $45 off our utility bill. In warmer months, that saving should be larger because the air conditioner runs longer.
I monitor the system through growatt shine. I like seeing solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in one place, although the app sometimes takes a minute to refresh. It showed the battery discharging while the house was clearly drawing from the grid. I checked the inverter and found the backup reserve setting had been raised after a firmware update. Lowering that reserve from 30 percent to 20 percent fixed the behavior, and the battery resumed covering the evening load.
My routine is now simple: I run heavy appliances during daylight when possible, leave enough battery capacity for the evening, and check the next morning’s energy flow. I am still learning how weather, tariffs, and battery charging limits interact, but the practical result is clear: fewer peak-rate kWh, less grid dependence, and a quieter monthly bill.
