Running my solar battery system for six months has changed how I think about electricity. I installed a 10 kWh home energy storage battery alongside my rooftop solar panels, mainly to avoid buying power during the evening peak. Before the battery, our household used most electricity after sunset, when rates were highest. Now the inverter charges the battery during sunny hours and discharges it between about 5 and 10 p.m.
The biggest practical difference shows up on the bill. Our monthly electricity cost has dropped from around $145 to $72, although the exact saving depends on weather and how much cooking, laundry, and heating we do. On a clear summer day, the battery usually reaches 100 percent by early afternoon. It then runs the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and sometimes our heat-pump water heater through the evening. I still buy grid power overnight, but far less of it. That feels more useful than watching impressive production numbers in an app.
I did have one mildly frustrating troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though its state of charge was above 60 percent. The growatt server showed the system as online, so I initially blamed the battery. After checking the inverter settings, I found that a time-of-use schedule had been reset during a firmware update. I restored the discharge window, restarted the system, and everything worked normally the next day. That experience taught me not to rely entirely on notifications; the inverter screen and physical power readings are worth checking.
So far, the battery has been quiet, automatic, and uneventful, which is exactly what I wanted. I am not completely energy independent, but this solar storage setup makes our solar power more useful and gives me noticeably better control over peak-hour costs without changing our normal evening routine much.
