I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar had already cut our daytime bill, but the panels produced their best energy while we were at work. By dinner, the house was pulling power at the worst possible time.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the solar inverter, and set a 20% reserve for outages. I chose this lithium iron phosphate system after reading about its cycle life and safer chemistry; the label on the paperwork actually said “li phosphate,” which made me laugh because it looked like a shorthand note rather than a polished product name.
What I notice most is the evening discharge. On sunny days, the battery fills by mid-afternoon and carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television until around bedtime. Our utility’s peak rate starts at 4 p.m., so this timing matters. Before storage, those hours regularly added roughly $3 to $5 per day in summer. Now the battery usually covers nearly all of it. Our monthly bill fell from about $185 to $92 during the hottest month, although weather and changing rates make that comparison imperfect.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed zero solar input even though the inverter was working. I power-cycled the gateway, waited five minutes, and refreshed the connection; the reading returned. Since then, I check the battery state of charge in the app once every few days, but I don’t obsess over it.
After several months, the biggest benefit is predictability. Solar generation varies, but storing surplus energy has made our household energy costs calmer and our backup power genuinely useful during brief neighborhood outages too.
