After six months of watching my electricity bills climb, I finally added a solar battery to our rooftop system. The main reason was simple: our panels produced plenty during the day, but we were buying power from the grid every evening when rates were highest.
The installer fitted a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage. Setup took most of one day. I appreciated that the crew explained the inverter settings instead of simply leaving me with an app and a handshake. They programmed it to charge from solar first, then discharge during our utility's peak window. The battery came from a factory with a sensible reserve, so it keeps 20% available during outages.
The biggest change showed up on my bills. Before storage, our evening cooking, laundry, and air conditioning regularly pushed us into expensive peak rates. In the first month, grid usage during those hours fell by roughly 80%. Our bill dropped from about $210 to $128, even though the weather was similar. That is a more noticeable saving than the annual production estimates ever made me feel.
What I like most is the routine. On sunny afternoons, I can see the battery charging while the house runs normally. After sunset, its stored energy covers the refrigerator, lights, router, and the dishwasher. I barely notice the switchover, except for the satisfying drop in grid consumption on the monitoring graph.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery stopped discharging at 5 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. A support technician noticed my time-of-use schedule had reset after a firmware update. We corrected the schedule remotely, and everything worked that evening.
That experience reminded me that solar battery ownership is not entirely set-and-forget, but the savings make the occasional check worthwhile.
