Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running our home solar battery storage system for the last eight months has changed the way I think about electricity, especially during the evening peak. I have a 5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery connected to a rooftop solar array and a growatt mic 1500 tlx inverter. The system is not huge, but it covers the useful stuff: refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and occasionally my home office.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges more. Before storage, we sent spare solar power to the grid during the afternoon and then bought it back at the expensive rate after dinner. Now the battery charges from solar, then discharges automatically once the peak period begins. On a typical sunny month, my bill has fallen by about $35 to $50. That is not dramatic money, but it is consistent, and the battery gives me more value from each kilowatt-hour my panels produce.
I did have one mildly frustrating evening. The battery stopped discharging even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the settings and found that a backup reserve had accidentally been set to 40 percent instead of 15 percent after a firmware update. Lowering the reserve restored normal operation immediately. I now check the app after updates rather than assuming everything stayed the same.
I also appreciate the quietness. There is no engine-like noise, and the battery cabinet barely gets warm in its shaded utility-room location. During a short outage, it kept our internet and refrigerator running, although I avoided starting larger appliances. For me, the practical win is not energy independence; it is using more of my own solar electricity and buying less during expensive hours. The savings are modest, but the routine feels reliable and simple for us.
