Running my home battery has changed the way I use our solar power, especially during expensive evening hours. We installed a 10 kWh growatt pylontech compatible LiFePO4 Battery last spring, mainly because our electricity bills were getting painful after dinner. The installer mounted it in the garage beside the inverter, and the whole job took most of a day. I watched the energy monitor rather obsessively during the first week.
On a normal sunny day, the rooftop solar panels charge the battery by early afternoon. Once the sun goes down, the battery supplies our lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and television instead of pulling electricity from the grid. Previously, our usage jumped between 5 and 9 p.m., when the tariff was highest. Now the system usually carries us through that period, and our monthly bill has dropped by roughly 30 to 40 percent. The exact saving varies with cloudy weather and how much cooking we do, but seeing the battery discharge on the app is genuinely satisfying.
The most useful practical feature is the reserve setting. I keep about 20 percent capacity untouched for outages, while the remaining energy handles peak-rate consumption. During one storm, the grid flickered twice, but our essential circuits stayed on without any noticeable interruption. I did have one minor troubleshooting moment: the battery stopped charging after a firmware update. The app showed an error, so I powered down the inverter, waited a few minutes, and restarted everything. Charging resumed, although I asked the installer to check the logs the next morning.
After several months, the battery has been quiet, predictable, and easy to ignore—which is exactly what I wanted. It has not eliminated my bill, but solar self-consumption is much higher, and I rely far less on expensive grid power. That alone makes the investment worthwhile.
