Running my home on solar storage has changed the way I think about electricity bills, especially during the evening peak. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring.

My routine: The solar panels charge the battery from late morning through the afternoon, and the battery powers the house from about 4 p.m. until bedtime. I leave the grid connected as a safety net, but on sunny days the inverter barely draws from it during peak hours.

The biggest difference is not total solar production; it is avoiding those high evening rates. I also like checking the battery monitoring app and seeing my self-consumption climb from roughly 45% to more than 80%.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its scheduled time. Nothing was broken: the time zone in the inverter settings had reset, so the schedule was an hour off. I corrected it, restarted the system, and normal operation returned. That experience made me glad I had kept the installer’s documentation instead of assuming everything was automatic.
