Running my evening routine has changed since I added a battery storage system to our rooftop solar setup. Before, the panels produced plenty during the day, but our house used the most electricity after dinner, when the kids were home and the oven, heat pump, and dishwasher were all competing for power. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a growatt hybrid inverter 5kw, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid electricity during peak hours.
On a typical sunny day, the battery reaches roughly 95 percent by mid-afternoon. Around 4 p.m., it stops sending surplus solar back to the grid and starts covering the house instead. I can see the change on the inverter app: grid import drops to nearly zero while the battery gradually falls to about 25 percent by bedtime. Our evening consumption is usually 6 to 7 kWh, so the battery does not completely carry us through the night, but it makes a noticeable difference. My monthly bill has fallen by about 30 percent compared with the same months last year, despite higher electricity rates.
The one annoying moment came during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 40 percent, even though the app showed a lower reserve setting. I checked the wiring labels and restarted the inverter, but nothing changed. The installer eventually found that backup reserve mode had been enabled during commissioning. Once that was corrected, the solar battery behaved normally.
I like that the system works quietly in the background. I rarely think about it unless I open the monitoring app, and there is no dramatic maintenance routine. My main advice is to set a realistic battery reserve and watch your household’s evening usage for a few weeks. That helped me adjust the settings for savings without sacrificing backup power during outages.
