I installed my home battery storage system last autumn because our evening electricity rates had become painful. The solar panels covered our daytime usage, but by dinner time we were drawing expensive grid power. My installer fitted a 10-kWh lithium battery using yinlong cells, a hybrid inverter, and a monitoring unit.
That first week was educational than exciting. I watched the battery charge from surplus solar, then discharge after 4:30 p.m. I changed the reserve setting to 20%, which gives us backup during outages without sacrificing too much usable capacity. The app shows solar generation, battery state of charge, and grid imports clearly enough for me to spot behavior.
The noticeable result is our peak-hour bill savings. Before storage, our winter evening consumption averaged around 8 kWh. Now the battery handles the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and the induction cooktop until bedtime. Our bill has fallen by roughly $45 to $70, depending on weather and how much we cook. That is not a dramatic overnight payback, but it feels meaningful because the savings repeat every day.
We did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. I found the inverter had switched from time-of-use mode to self-consumption mode. Re-selecting the tariff schedule fixed it, and the installer confirmed nothing was wrong with the battery. Since then, the system has been boring, which is exactly what I wanted.
I check the forecast before cloudy days and avoid running the clothes dryer during peak rates. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge by early afternoon; on rainy days, it saves less but keeps essential loads running. For my household, the biggest benefit is simple: solar power I generate is finally useful after sunset, rather than immediately disappearing into the grid.
