Nearly six months ago I had a home solar battery installed, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings from our panels. The setup includes an enerdrive inverter and a 10 kWh lithium battery in the garage. I was nervous about changing our routine, but the system has been surprisingly unintrusive.
On a normal sunny day, the battery fills by early afternoon. After dinner, it runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and sometimes our heat-pump dryer. That shift has made the biggest difference to my bill. Before installation, our evening usage regularly pushed us into expensive peak rates. Now we use stored solar power until around 10 p.m., when the battery reserve setting takes over. Our monthly bill has fallen by roughly $85 on average, although seasonal weather still affects the result. I pay closer attention to the app now, and seeing solar self-consumption climb from about 35% to nearly 75% feels genuinely rewarding.
The one hiccup happened during a string of cloudy days. I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 40%, even though the house was drawing power. My first thought was that the inverter had failed. I checked the monitoring screen and found I had accidentally enabled a backup reserve intended for outages. Once I lowered that reserve to 20%, discharge resumed within a few minutes. It was a small mistake, but it taught me not to judge battery storage performance before checking the settings.
I still buy some grid electricity, especially in winter, and I would not call the system completely maintenance-free. I occasionally wipe dust from the panels and check cable and app alerts. Even so, the quiet savings are practical: laundry can run after sunset without me thinking about peak pricing, and the battery backup gives me peace of mind during outages.
