Running my solar battery system through the summer has changed the way I use electricity at home. Before installing it, I watched the meter climb every evening when our family cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and turned on the air conditioner. Now, most of that peak-hour demand comes from stored solar power instead of the grid.

My setup includes a 5kWh lithium battery, rooftop solar panels, and a growatt 5kw off grid inverter. The installation itself was fairly straightforward, although I spent more time than expected adjusting the inverter settings. I wanted the battery to charge from solar first, remain available during outages, and avoid unnecessary grid charging. Once those settings were correct, the system became almost invisible in daily use.

The biggest practical difference is our evening bill. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon. It then runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, televisions, and smaller appliances after sunset. During the hottest weeks, it also helps with the air conditioner for a few hours. My monthly electricity bill has dropped by roughly 35–45%, depending on the weather and how often we use cooling.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the monitoring app showed plenty of energy remaining. After checking the inverter display, I found the low-voltage reserve had been set too high. I lowered the backup reserve slightly, restarted the system, and normal operation returned. I now keep a higher reserve before stormy weather, since backup power is one of the main reasons I bought the battery.

The system has not eliminated my electricity bill, and cloudy stretches still require grid power. However, solar self-consumption is much better, and I feel less exposed to peak rates. For me, the battery storage system has been most valuable as a daily bill-saving tool, with outage protection as a useful bonus.
