Running my home mostly on stored solar power has changed how I think about electricity bills. I installed a battery energy storage system last summer, paired with rooftop solar and a growatt 50kw inverter setup. My main goal was simple: use less grid electricity during the expensive evening hours.

Before the battery, our power use jumped between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. when everyone was home, cooking, running the dishwasher, and using air conditioning. Those peak-hour rates were frustrating because the solar panels had already stopped producing by then. Now, the battery charges during the afternoon, and the system automatically discharges after sunset. On a typical sunny day, I come home to a battery sitting around 80–90%, and it carries most of our evening load.

My monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35–45%, depending on the weather and how much heating or cooling we use. The biggest difference is not having to buy as much electricity during peak pricing. I still draw from the grid overnight in winter, but the solar battery noticeably smooths out those expensive hours. It also feels good seeing our self-consumption improve instead of sending excess daytime solar away for a low export credit.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. For several days, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The monitoring app showed it was connected, but the reserve setting had somehow been changed to 40%. Once I lowered the backup reserve to 20%, normal operation returned. I now check the battery state of charge and schedule after firmware updates.

The system has not made us completely energy independent, but it has made our daily electricity use more predictable. For me, the real value is practical: fewer peak-rate charges, better use of our solar generation, and backup capacity when the grid is unreliable. It has become one of those home upgrades I notice most when I look at the bill.
