Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Early last summer, I installed a 10-kWh lithium solar battery in my garage, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. Before that, my rooftop panels produced plenty during the day, but I still paid for power after dinner, when rates were highest. The home energy storage system changed that pattern immediately. My inverter charges the battery around lunchtime, then switches the house over to stored power at 4 p.m.
The first full month was the real test. My utility bill fell from about $186 to $117, even though we had several cloudy days and ran the air conditioner most afternoons. The biggest difference showed up between 5 and 9 p.m. I used the battery for cooking, laundry, lights, and our heat-pump water heater instead of pulling from the grid. That roughly $69 saved that month was not a dramatic marketing promise, just a noticeable reduction in daily spending.
I also like seeing the numbers in the monitoring app. It tells me how much solar energy went into storage and how many kilowatt-hours the battery supplied later. That feedback helped me change habits; I now run the dishwasher before sunset whenever possible, and I save stored energy for the expensive evening window.
My only annoying moment came during a winter power outage. The battery stopped discharging after about ten minutes, even though the app showed plenty of charge. I found that the backup output breaker had tripped when the heat pump started. After resetting it, everything worked, but I lowered the backup load setting so the water heater would not start alongside the refrigerator. I have not had a repeat since.
For my household, the best off grid battery is one that matches demand and has a sensible warranty. Mine is grid-tied, but provides useful outage backup and peak-rate control too.
