Running my solar battery after work has changed the way I think about our electricity bill. I installed a growatt 3500 inverter with a lithium battery last spring, mainly to store excess power from our rooftop panels instead of sending most of it back to the grid.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. My installer mounted the inverter beside the meter, connected the battery, and spent an afternoon configuring the monitoring app. I did have one nervous moment on the first evening: the battery percentage stopped at 72%, even though the sun was still out. A look at the app showed that the house was using nearly all the panel output, so there simply was not much surplus left to charge. Nothing was broken; our dishwasher and heat-pump water heater were running together.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges its higher peak rate. I usually let the battery fill during the middle of the day, then set it to discharge after dinner. Before installing energy storage, we regularly paid around $180 a month in summer. This year, similar months have landed between $105 and $125. The exact savings vary with cloudy weather, but the battery has noticeably reduced our peak-hour consumption.
I also like having a little backup power. During a short outage, the lights and refrigerator stayed on, although I avoided running the oven and air conditioner. The switchover was enough that my Wi-Fi barely noticed.
The system is not magic: winter solar production is low, and battery capacity still requires sensible load management. Still, checking the state of charge each morning and seeing the house run on stored solar at night has been satisfying. For me, the win is quieter electricity bills rather than chasing app graphs.
