I installed a 10 kWh solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My setup is fairly ordinary: 4.8 kW of rooftop panels, a hybrid inverter, and a battery pack built around a lifepo4 420ah cell bank. I am not trying to run my entire house off-grid; I wanted to use more of the solar power I was already making.

The biggest difference has shown up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, my electric meter raced whenever we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and turned on the heat pump after sunset. Now the solar battery charges during the day, then the inverter quietly supplies those loads through the peak period. My utility plan has time-of-use pricing, so this simple shift has cut my evening grid consumption by roughly 8 to 11 kWh on a normal day. That works out to about $2.50 to $4.00 saved daily, depending on the season. It does not sound dramatic, but across a month I usually see $75 to $95 less on the bill. In summer, when the panels fill the battery easily, the savings are especially noticeable. I also like seeing the battery state of charge on the monitoring app; it makes our household habits surprisingly visible. We now run laundry around lunchtime and avoid draining the pack before sunrise.

I did have one minor scare. The battery stopped charging at 62 percent, even though the panels were producing. The app showed no fault, so I checked the inverter settings and found a backup reserve set too high. After lowering that reserve from 60 to 25 percent, charging resumed normally. I kept the reserve, but 60 percent meant I was wasting capacity every sunny afternoon. That taught me to understand my own settings better now properly.
