Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running our solar battery through its first summer changed the way I think about electricity bills. Before installing it, my rooftop panels produced plenty during the day, but I was still buying expensive power after dinner. The battery now charges in the afternoon and carries our house through the evening, which has made the biggest practical difference.
My setup is fairly modest: a 6kW solar array, a 10kWh battery paired with a growatt pv grid inverter. I did not choose the system myself; an installer handled the wiring and commissioning. The installation took most of a day, and the only messy part was getting the monitoring app to recognize the battery. After a firmware update and one reboot, the status finally matched what I could see on the inverter screen.
The savings show up most clearly between 4pm and 9pm. On weekdays, I set the battery to reserve 20%, then let it discharge during peak rates. My summer bill dropped from around $185 per month to $112, even though we used the air conditioner more than usual. That is roughly $73 saved monthly, not a flashy promise, just a noticeable reduction I can see in the utility account. On cloudy days, the battery sometimes runs out before bedtime, but I would rather accept that than buy every evening kilowatt-hour at the highest rate.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in August. The battery stopped discharging even though it showed 68% charge. I checked the app and found that backup reserve had accidentally been moved to 70% during a software update. Lowering it restored normal operation immediately. That small incident taught me to check settings before assuming something had failed. I now check it weekly from my phone.
