Early last summer, I installed a home solar battery after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump during the evening peak. My rooftop solar panels were already producing more power than we used at lunchtime, but I was still buying electricity after dinner when rates were highest. Adding storage, including the gentrax system I chose, changed that routine more than I expected.

The biggest difference has been how I use the battery each day. By late afternoon, the battery is usually charged from the solar panels. Once the sun goes down, it powers our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and television instead of sending us straight back to the grid. I set it to discharge during the utility’s peak-rate window, which is usually from about 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. On mild days, we get through most of that period without much grid electricity.

Our first full month with the solar battery reduced the energy portion of our bill by roughly 35 percent. It is not a dramatic overnight transformation, because we still use the grid on cloudy days and the battery cannot run every large appliance indefinitely. Still, seeing our evening consumption drop was satisfying. I also stopped worrying as much about running the washing machine or charging devices after sunset.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though its charge level looked healthy. I eventually found that a recent time-of-use setting had been overwritten during a software update. After restoring the schedule in the monitoring app, everything worked normally. That experience taught me to check the battery settings instead of assuming the hardware had failed.

So far, the practical benefit has been less dependence on peak-rate electricity, not complete energy independence. The system quietly saves money every day, and I like being able to see our solar production, battery storage, and household consumption in one place.
