I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar array is only 6.6kW, so I was not expecting miracles. What surprised me was how quickly the battery changed our ordinary routine.
Before storage, our house pulled power from the grid between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., exactly when rates were highest. Now the inverter charges the battery from solar after lunch and switches the house over after dinner. On sunny days, we usually make it through the night without grid power. My monthly bill fell from around $185 to $112, a savings of roughly $73. It varies with weather and heating use, but the difference is obvious.
The battery uses lithium iron phosphate battery cells 300ah, which I chose because of their safety reputation and long cycle life. I am not a technical person, but the monitoring app makes the solar battery easy to understand. I can see state of charge, solar production, household load, and whether I am importing electricity. That visibility has helped me change habits too: I run the dishwasher and washing machine during the afternoon instead of during peak pricing.
I did have one small scare during the first hot week. The inverter showed a communication warning, and the battery stopped discharging overnight. I restarted the gateway and checked the cable connections; the warning disappeared after about five minutes. Since then it has been reliable. The installer also adjusted the reserve setting from 20% to 15%, giving me a little more usable capacity while keeping backup power available for outages.
I would not claim this setup eliminated my electric bill. Winter clouds still mean grid imports, and the upfront cost was significant. Still, having home battery storage has made solar energy feel practical, not theoretical.
