Running my home on solar power, I finally added a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring. Setup was straightforward. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and spent most of the afternoon checking cables, settings, and the energy meter. I had to choose a backup reserve, so I kept 25% available for outages and let the system use the rest for daily cycling.
Before storage, my panels produced plenty during the day, but I still bought expensive electricity after dinner. That changed immediately. The battery charges from rooftop solar on most sunny days in the afternoon and discharges from 4pm until about 10pm. I learned that the app calls one setting a frequency inverter mode, which confused me; in my case, it simply controlled how the inverter responded to grid frequency changes. Not a fault, just an awkward translation.
My first month with the battery cut my evening grid use by 70%. My bill fell from about $186 to $119, despite running the dishwasher and heat-pump water heater more often. Savings vary; cloudy weeks still need grid power. But seeing the battery cover dinner, laundry, and overnight standby loads feels much better than watching solar energy spill back to the utility.
The only hiccup came during a storm. The battery stopped discharging and showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway once, but the warning returned. The installer found a loose network plug the next morning and fixed it in ten minutes. Since then, it has been boring in the best way: quiet, automatic, and predictable. I check the state of charge before bed, but otherwise I seldom touch it. For me, the biggest benefit is not total energy independence; it is using my own solar power when rates are highest.
