I installed a lifepo4 10kw battery last spring after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening. My rooftop solar system produces plenty during the day, but our household uses the most power after sunset, when the panels are doing nothing. The battery changed that pattern almost immediately.
The setup was simpler than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter in my garage, connected it to the existing solar panels, and configured it to charge during the day. I set the energy storage system to discharge during peak-rate hours, usually from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent by late afternoon, and we run the kitchen, lights, television, and sometimes the heat pump from stored solar power.
The biggest practical difference is on my bill. Before adding storage, I was exporting cheap daytime electricity and buying expensive power at night. My first full month with the solar battery reduced the bill by roughly $ eighty compared with the same season the previous year. That number varies with weather and our usage, but the peak-hour savings have been consistent. I also appreciate seeing the battery monitor rather than guessing where our energy goes.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a firmware update, the monitoring app showed the battery as offline even though the inverter display showed normal operation. I restarted the communications gateway, waited a few minutes, and the connection returned. The battery never stopped powering the house, so it was more annoying than serious.
After several months, I am happiest with the predictability. The lifepo4 battery quietly covers our evening demand, and we rely less on grid electricity without changing our routine. For me, solar panels alone were useful, but pairing them with a 10kWh home battery made the investment feel complete.
