I installed a 10 kWh fifepo4 solar battery in my garage last spring, mostly to stop sending cheap daytime solar back to the grid. The electrician paired it with my existing rooftop panels and a hybrid inverter, and the whole job took most of one Saturday.
I had expected a complicated installation, but watching the battery app recognize the inverter was surprisingly painless. The app now shows solar production, battery state-of-charge, and household consumption in one place, which makes it much easier to understand our energy habits.
My biggest improvement is during peak hours. Before installation, I ran the dishwasher, cooked dinner, and used the clothes dryer between five and eight in the evening because that was simply when we needed them. That routine pushed our grid usage into the expensive period.
Now, the battery charges from surplus solar around lunchtime and discharges after sunset automatically. I still use the same appliances, but the house draws far less electricity from the utility during those hours. Our monthly bill has fallen by roughly 35 to 45 dollars, depending on weather, which is more noticeable than I expected from a modest system.
The battery does not eliminate the bill, since we have cloudy days and still pay fixed connection charges, but it has made the expensive tariff almost irrelevant most months.
One minor troubleshooting moment came during a hot week when the battery stopped discharging at night. The monitoring app displayed a communication warning, so I checked the inverter cabinet and found our home Wi-Fi router had rebooted. After reconnecting the router, the battery resumed normal operation within about ten minutes, without a service call. That little incident taught me to check the network before assuming a hardware fault.
I also appreciate that the fifepo4 battery has a usable capacity and quiet operation; it is barely noticeable from the adjoining room.
