Very quickly, I stopped checking the electricity app every morning. Last summer, I installed a home solar battery after getting tired of watching our evening usage push the bill up. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime appliances, but the battery changed how I used that energy after sunset.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate unit and had an electrician mount it in the garage beside the inverter. The installation took most of a day. The only surprise was how much space the shutoff equipment and extra conduit needed. It was not difficult, just less tidy than the sales brochure suggested. I also added an everstart portable battery later for small backup jobs, though it is separate from my main storage system.
The biggest improvement has been peak-hour savings. I programmed the battery to charge from solar during the afternoon and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. That covers our induction cooking, dishwasher, television, and heat pump startup surprisingly well. Before storage, our utility imported power during those hours almost every day. Now the meter usually shows little or no grid consumption until bedtime.
My average monthly bill fell from about $185 to $72, although weather and utility rates obviously vary. I do not claim the battery eliminated the bill; cloudy weeks still mean buying electricity, and winter production is noticeably weaker. Still, saving roughly $110 per month has made the payback feel real rather than theoretical.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in January. The battery stopped discharging after a firmware update, leaving the house on grid power overnight. I restarted the inverter, checked the monitoring settings, and contacted the installer. They pushed a configuration fix remotely, and it worked that evening. Since then, I check the app weekly instead of obsessively.
Savings matter most.
