I installed my first solar battery last spring after watching our evening electricity bills climb. Our rooftop panels were already producing plenty during the day, but we were exporting cheap midday power and buying expensive electricity after dinner. I chose a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery because I wanted something simple, safe, and large enough to cover our normal nighttime use without pretending we were completely off-grid.
The installation itself took most of an afternoon. The electrician mounted the battery in our garage, added a hybrid inverter, and connected the monitoring app. My only confusing moment was the battery screen: it showed “lifepo4 soc” at 100 percent, then dropped to 96 percent almost immediately once the sun disappeared. I initially thought the battery was faulty, but the installer explained that the reading was settling after charging and balancing. Since then, the state of charge has been steady and much easier to understand.
The biggest difference is peak-hour savings. Before the battery, our dishwasher, cooking, heat-pump water heater, and evening lights all hit the grid between five and nine. Now the battery automatically discharges during that window. On a typical sunny day, it reaches full charge around early afternoon and still has roughly 35 to 45 percent remaining when we go to bed. Our utility bill fell from about $210 to $132 in the first comparable month, despite similar weather and usage. That is not a dramatic promise of free electricity, but saving nearly $80 feels very real in our household budget.
I appreciate the quietness. There is no noise, and the battery has needed no attention beyond checking the solar monitoring app. During a cloudy weekend, I adjusted the reserve from 20 to 30 percent so we would keep backup power. That setting change made the system practical rather than complicated.
