Nearly six months ago I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly because our electricity bill jumped whenever the evening peak rates kicked in. My setup uses an inverter growatt spf 5000 connected to eight panels and a wall-mounted battery cabinet in the garage. I paid an electrician to handle the changeover and battery settings; installation took a Saturday, although waiting for utility approval was a little slower.
The biggest difference is how little grid power we use after dinner. During sunny hours, the panels run the house and charge the battery. Around 4 p.m., I usually check the monitoring app and see the battery at 80–100 percent. It then carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through the expensive evening window. Before storage, those hours cost me roughly $3 to $5 per day in winter. Since installing it, my monthly bill has fallen by about $70 during the colder months, not counting occasional outages. That saving feels more noticeable than the app’s impressive graphs.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at night and sat at 100 percent. I first assumed the battery was failing, but the inverter had reverted to a conservative charge-only setting. The installer talked me through the menu, and I restored the time-of-use schedule in about ten minutes. Since then, it has been boringly reliable, which is exactly what I wanted from home energy storage.
I still watch the state of charge on cloudy days and keep the battery reserve at 25 percent so essential circuits have backup power. The system cannot erase every grid charge, especially after several dull days, but it has made solar self-consumption much higher. For me, the real win is simple: I use more of my own solar energy.
