On the first full month with my home battery, I finally stopped watching the electricity meter like it was a slot machine.

I had a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar energy storage battery installed beside the garage last autumn, after comparing quotes and reading far too many threads on solarquotes. My main goal was simple: use more of my rooftop solar after sunset instead of sending it cheaply to the grid.

The difference was most obvious between 4pm and 9pm. Before the battery, our electric oven, lights, television, and heat-pump dryer all pulled from the grid during the expensive peak period. Now the battery usually charges around lunchtime, then carries us through dinner and the evening. On sunny days, the app shows almost no grid consumption until bedtime.

My bills have fallen by roughly $70–$90 a month compared with the same months last year, although rates and weather have changed. That is not a dramatic overnight miracle, but it makes the battery feel worthwhile, especially when I remember we are running the dishwasher and air conditioner mostly on stored solar.

I did have one small scare in the second week. The battery stopped discharging at 6pm, even though the app said it was 62% full. I restarted the inverter through the system menu, and after five minutes it resumed normally. The installer later explained that a firmware update had briefly confused the monitoring connection; the battery itself was fine. Since then, I check the app occasionally, but I no longer panic at every warning icon.

For me, the best part is not backup power during an outage, though that’s useful too. It is the quiet satisfaction of seeing solar energy cover ordinary household use instead of disappearing into the grid. I am considering adding another battery module next year, but I will first watch a full winter of performance.
