Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
After adding a 10-kWh LiFePO4 solar battery to my home last spring, the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed my evening routine. Before, my solar panels sent excess electricity back to the grid during the day, then I bought most of my power after dinner when rates were highest. Now the battery charges between late morning and afternoon and carries us through the expensive hours.
Installation was fairly painless because I already had a hybrid inverter and a clear utility room wall. The installer mounted the battery beside it, connected the backup loads, and tested each circuit. I chose the unit partly because its monitoring app displayed cell voltage, temperature, and charge level through a daly smart bms lifepo4 controller.
During my first full month, my electricity bill fell from about $186 to $113, despite similar weather and nearly identical usage. The savings came mostly from avoiding peak-hour electricity between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. I set the inverter to reserve twenty-five percent for outages and discharge the rest automatically.
On sunny days, the battery is usually around 95% by midafternoon. It runs our refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, router, and lights after sunset, while I avoid starting the clothes dryer until daytime. That change sounds small, but it has made the monthly savings much more predictable than simply exporting solar power.
I did have one minor scare in July. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 100% for hours, even though the inverter was still charging. Power-cycling the communications cable did not help, but restarting the inverter and refreshing the BMS connection cleared it. The installer later told me the update had reset the display calibration, not the actual battery.
Since then, it performs reliably; I check charge at breakfast and rarely think about battery until dusk.
