Having our solar battery installed last spring, I expected the biggest benefit to be lower electricity bills, but the change I noticed first was how much calmer our evenings feel.

Before the battery, we tried to run the dishwasher and laundry before the sun went down. Our utility uses time-of-use rates, so peak-hour electricity from 4–9 p.m. was painfully expensive. Now the solar panels fill the battery during the afternoon, and the inverter switches us to stored energy as soon as peak pricing begins.

On a typical sunny day, I see the battery reach about 95% by late afternoon. We use roughly 8 to 10 kWh overnight, mostly for the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and our heat pump. That has cut our evening grid consumption dramatically. My monthly bill dropped from around $180 to $95 during the summer, even though we ran the air conditioner more than usual. The savings are not identical every month—cloudy weather still matters—but the battery pays for itself a little more every billing cycle.

One small hiccup happened in July. The battery stopped charging at 72% after a brief outage, and the app showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The system resumed charging normally that afternoon. I appreciated that the troubleshooting was simple; I did not need an electrician or a replacement part.

The only adjustment has been learning not to obsess over the battery percentage. At first, I watched the monitoring app constantly. Now I mainly check whether solar production looks normal and whether the battery is reserving enough backup power for the night. For us, the biggest win is practical: solar energy that used to disappear into the grid now runs our home when rates are highest. It makes the investment worthwhile for us.
