Solution Solar Battery
After installing a 10 kWh home battery last summer, I started paying much closer attention to when my house used electricity. My rooftop solar panels had already lowered my daytime bill, but the battery made the bigger difference after sunset, especially during peak-rate hours.
The system uses catl lfp cells, and I chose it mainly because I wanted a safer chemistry with a long cycle life. The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter in my garage, added a backup-loads panel, and connected the monitoring app. We had one afternoon without power while the wiring was completed, but the rest was straightforward.
My daily routine changed slightly. During sunny hours, the panels run the refrigerator, washing machine, and heat-pump water heater while charging the battery. Around 4 p.m., the battery begins discharging automatically. I usually have enough stored energy to cover cooking, lights, Wi-Fi, and the television through bedtime. I still pull a little electricity from the grid on cloudy days, but I no longer buy as much expensive evening power.
The savings are most noticeable in summer. Before adding energy storage, my monthly bill averaged about $185. Since installing it, comparable months have been closer to $105, although weather and utility rates obviously vary. That is roughly $80 saved in a month when we use the air conditioner regularly. I also like seeing the battery state of charge in the app; it makes household energy use feel less mysterious.
One minor annoyance happened during the first week. The battery stopped discharging because its reserve setting was accidentally left at 40 percent, so it held too much energy back. After lowering the reserve to 20 percent, the system behaved normally. I keep that reserve for outages, and during a brief evening blackout, the backup power switched on quickly enough that our internet router never rebooted. For me, the practical win is simple: more solar energy stays in my home, peak-hour grid use has dropped, and the battery quietly does its job every day.
