Using my solar battery for the past eight months has changed the way I think about our electricity bill. Before installing it, I usually watched the meter climb after dinner, when our utility switched to expensive peak rates. Now, the battery charges from my rooftop solar during the afternoon and runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. I am not completely off-grid, but that simple change has made a noticeable difference.
On a normal weekday, my app shows the battery filling to about 90% by 3:30 p.m. It then discharges gradually until midnight. My average monthly bill used to sit around $180 during summer; it now hovers near $105, although weather and utility rates vary. The savings are not dramatic every day, but avoiding those high-rate hours feels especially worthwhile. I also like seeing less solar energy wasted when the panels are producing more than the house needs.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. A local installer mounted the battery beside my garage, added a hybrid inverter, and connected it to my existing solar panels. The whole installation took most of a day. I had searched online for how to build a battery backup system, but I realized the transfer switch and permits were not things I wanted to improvise. I chose the refrigerator, internet, and lights as backup loads.
The best test came during a windy night when the grid went down for two hours. The battery switched over automatically, and I barely noticed except for a click from the inverter. Later, the monitoring app showed a communication warning and the state of charge incorrectly. I restarted the gateway, checked the Ethernet cable, and waited. The reading corrected itself after the connection returned. It was minor, but it taught me not to panic.
