My surprise after installing a solar battery was how much calmer my evenings became. Before, I watched the utility meter and tried to avoid running the oven, dishwasher, or heat pump during peak hours. Now my rooftop solar charges the battery through the afternoon, and the inverter carries the house from late afternoon until bedtime. I built the pack around a bms 4s lifepo4 100a setup, although my bank is configured for my inverter’s higher-voltage requirements. The part that mattered to me was having battery management, cell balancing, fusing, and a disconnect—not connecting cells and hoping for the best.
The savings are obvious on hot days. Our utility’s period starts at 4 p.m., when the house gets busy. With the battery set to self-consumption, solar power first runs the refrigerator and air conditioner, then the battery takes over when the panels fall short. During July, my evening grid use dropped by 8 to 11 kWh per day. That cut my monthly bill by about $45 to $70, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. It is not a magic bill eliminator, but seeing the battery discharge instead of buying peak-rate electricity feels useful.
I did have one scare during the week. The system stopped discharging at 18 percent state of charge, even though I expected it to reach 10 percent. The monitoring app showed no fault, so I checked the inverter’s reserve setting and found it had been left at the factory default. Lowering the reserve to 15 percent fixed the behavior without touching the battery wiring. Since then, I check temperatures, state of charge, and daily solar production once or twice a week. The battery has been reliable, and the best feature is simple: I use more of my own solar energy instead of sending it back to the grid for a poor credit.
