I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly because our utility charges nearly three times more during evening peak hours. My system is modest: 6kW of rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and one wall-mounted battery in the garage. The change was noticeable from the first full week.
Before storage, I would send plenty of afternoon solar back to the grid, then buy electricity between 4pm and 9pm. Now the battery charges after lunch and carries the house through dinner, laundry, and our usual television time. On sunny days, my evening grid usage has dropped from roughly 12kWh to 2kWh. That usually saves me about $2–$3 per day, or around $55 monthly. It is not a dramatic “off-grid” lifestyle, but seeing the utility bill fall from $210 to $145 made the investment feel worthwhile.
The most useful setting has been a 20% reserve. I originally set it at 10%, but one cloudy morning the battery shut down before sunrise and the inverter switched to grid power. Nothing was broken; I had simply underestimated our overnight load. Raising the backup reserve stopped the surprise. I also learned that charging behavior matters more than advertised capacity. My installer configured the battery to avoid peak-rate charging, and I use a lifepo4 battery charger 100a when testing the backup setup.
