Last summer, I finally added a 10-kWh solar battery to the rooftop system on our house. I was less interested in chasing a perfect energy setup than in making our evening bills less painful. The battery sits in the garage beside the inverter, and after weeks, it became something I stopped thinking about.
Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so the useful change happens between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. During the day, solar panels run the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, and washing machine while charging the lithium iron phosphate battery. After sunset, the system switches automatically to battery power. We still cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and let the kids use their computers without drawing from the grid at the expensive rate.
Before storage, my July bill averaged about $186. With similar weather and habits, it has landed between $112 and $128 for the last three months. That is roughly $60-$74 saved monthly, not counting the occasional cloudy week. I realize the battery did not eliminate my bill, but seeing the evening usage graph drop is satisfying.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. One morning, the monitoring app showed the battery at 2% even though the forecast promised sun. I found the inverter had entered standby after a brief grid outage. Cycling its communication switch and waiting five minutes brought everything back online. Since then, I have enabled outage alerts and keep the battery reserve at 20% instead of letting it drain completely.
The system is not a magic money-saving machine. Installation cost was significant, and I still watch heavy loads like the dryer. I have also looked into an electric car conversion kit, but that project can wait until our roof produces more energy. For now, this solar battery gives us quieter evenings and a much more predictable energy budget.
