Solution Solar Battery
Early last summer, I installed the best home battery storage option for us, a 10kWh battery in my garage, mainly because utility peak rates began at 4–9pm. I already had rooftop solar, but before the battery, I was sending plenty of afternoon electricity back to the grid and buying it back after dinner. That felt wasteful.
The setup was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside my inverter, added a backup gateway, and had the app tracking charge levels within an afternoon. My only real involvement was moving some shelves and connecting the Wi-Fi. I chose a time-of-use schedule that charges from solar during the day and covers household loads during peak hours. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100% by mid-afternoon.
The savings became obvious in the first full billing cycle. Our evening electricity use is fairly ordinary—cooking, laundry, a heat-pump water heater, and lights—but those few hours used to push our daily bill up. After adding energy storage, my peak-hour grid consumption fell by roughly 8–12 kWh per day in summer. Our monthly bill dropped from about $210 to $128, although weather and rates vary. I am not pretending the battery eliminates the bill; it simply lets me use more of my own solar power when it matters most.
One small hiccup happened during a cloudy week. The app showed the battery at 18%, and it stopped discharging overnight even though the backup reserve was set to 20%. I rebooted the gateway, but the reading did not change. Support explained that the system was recalibrating after a firmware update; it corrected itself the next morning. Since then, I have left the reserve at 25%, which gives me more comfort during outages.
That small glitch was annoying, but the savings have been worth it.
