4:00 a.m. was when I first checked the app and saw my home battery still at 68% after running the house through the evening. That felt genuinely reassuring to me.
I had the system installed last summer, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity during our utility’s evening peak window. I was tired of watching bills jump every month at home.
The installer paired a 240 volt inverter with a 13.5-kilowatt-hour lithium battery and rooftop solar panels. The equipment is not glamorous, but it fits neatly beside my garage without fuss.
The best change is what happens between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Solar production is fading, yet the battery supplies nearly everything we use. That is when rates hurt most.
Before installation, our bill averaged about $190 in summer. Last month it was $82, even though we used more air conditioning. The savings are not theoretical to us at all.
I do still buy grid power overnight when the battery reaches its reserve setting, but I changed that reserve from 20% to 30% after one cloudy week. That buffer helps.
My only real hiccup came during a brief internet outage. The battery kept working, but the monitoring app showed stale information, so I initially thought solar charging had completely stopped.
I checked the inverter’s front display, saw normal power flow, and left it alone. By morning, the connection returned and the battery history filled in correctly. That was a reminder.
I have not needed to clean anything beyond keeping leaves off the panels. The battery is quiet, and I barely notice it unless I open the app to check energy.
For my household, the biggest benefit is predictable evening power rather than total energy independence. I still watch usage, but peak rates no longer dictate our cooking and laundry choices.
