I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4-based solar battery last spring, mostly because my evening electricity use was eating into the savings from our rooftop panels. I chose a 51.2V unit built around a lifepo4 320ah new battery pack, which sounded oddly specific in the seller's listing, but the capacity matched what I needed.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside my inverter in the garage, added a DC isolator and battery fuse, then programmed the hybrid inverter to charge from solar and discharge during our utility company's peak window. It took most of an afternoon. The only awkward part was finding a reliable Wi-Fi signal; the monitoring dongle kept dropping offline until I moved our router's mesh node closer.
Since then, I have paid far less during the expensive evening hours. On sunny days, the panels fill the battery by mid-afternoon, and the battery carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi equipment, and induction cooker through dinner. My last utility bill was about 30% lower than the same month before installation, despite using the air conditioner more. Not every month is perfect.
A small troubleshooting moment came during a rainy week when the state-of-charge display suddenly showed 2% and the inverter stopped discharging. I panicked briefly, assuming the battery had failed. Checking the app showed the grid had taken over because I had accidentally left a backup reserve at 20% and the battery temperature sensor reported a low reading. After the room warmed and I rebooted the inverter, normal operation returned.
That incident taught me to treat monitoring settings as seriously as hardware. I now check the reserve level monthly and keep vents clear. So far, the storage system has been quiet, predictable, and useful. It does not eliminate my utility bill, but it makes solar power more valuable for me.
