After six months with my rooftop solar panels and a basen lifeph4 280ah battery, I finally feel like I am using most of the electricity I generate. Before the battery, I sent plenty of cheap daytime solar back to the grid and bought power back during the expensive evening window. My main reason for adding this home energy storage system was peak-hour bill savings, and that is where it has made the clearest difference. The inverter charges the lithium iron phosphate battery after breakfast, then switches the house over around 4:30 p.m., just before our utility rate jumps. We run the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, internet equipment, and lights from stored solar until bedtime. On sunny days, I rarely pull from the grid between dinner and midnight.
Looking at my utility statements, peak usage has dropped by roughly 60%, while my monthly bill fell from about $180 in summer to $105. It varies with weather and heating, of course, but the change is obvious.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage, ran new conduit to the inverter, and programmed a simple time-of-use schedule. After commissioning, I spent an evening watching the monitoring app instead of trusting it immediately. That sounds obsessive, but I wanted to see whether the state-of-charge percentage matched the actual household load.
One minor troubleshooting moment happened during the first rainy week. The battery stopped discharging at 25%, even though the house was still using power. I initially thought something was wrong with the lithium battery or solar inverter. A quick message to the installer revealed that backup reserve had been set conservatively. Lowering it to 15% fixed the behavior, while leaving enough emergency capacity for my comfort.
Now I check the app occasionally, but mostly forget it is there.
