I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, mainly because our evening electricity use was getting expensive. Before that, my rooftop solar exported plenty at lunchtime, then we bought power back after dinner when rates were highest.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set the app to reserve 20 percent for outages. The biggest difference showed up between 4 and 9 p.m. On sunny days, the battery charges from solar once the panels have covered the house. In the evening, it runs our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and sometimes the heat pump. Previously, those hours were our most expensive. Now the inverter quietly switches to stored energy, and the grid meter barely moves.
My bills are not magically zero, especially during cloudy winter weeks, but the peak-hour portion has fallen noticeably. Over the first full summer month, we used 238 kWh from the battery during evening peak periods and saved roughly $72 compared with the previous summer. That number varies with weather and utility rates, yet seeing the daily graph is satisfying. I can tell when a cloudy afternoon will cost us more.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The app showed it was “waiting for tariff,” even though the rate schedule had not changed. I rebooted the inverter, checked the time zone, and re-saved the charge settings. It resumed that evening, and support confirmed the update had reset the schedule. It has stayed dependable.
